PROCLAMATION



In Recognition of the 368th Engineer Battalion

WHEREAS:                    The 368th Engineer Battalion has supported the City of Bristol's Memorial Day Events since 2006. Each year the support has grown in the number of soldiers and equipment.
                                                In 2006 they provided three pieces of Army equipment and 5 soldiers to 2009 when they brought 9 pieces of equipment and provided 14 soldiers to lend support to the
                                                weekend events; and

WHEREAS:                          In addition to volunteering their time to support Bristol's huge Memorial Day celebration, they have now become heroes for their selfless acts of bravery at the scene of a serious
                                                automobile accident which took place on the evening of Memorial Day Weekend events: and


WHEREAS:                        The soldiers of the 368th Engineering Battalion were guests of the American Legion in recognition  of their support of the Memorial Day Weekend events; and


WHEREAS:                         At approximately 1700 hours on Sunday, May 24th, a woman driving an automobile was cut off by another vehicle and due to the slick road conditions she hit a telephone pole and
                                               flipped her vehicle. One of the members of the battalion saw the flipped car with smoke coming out of it and quickly called for help from her fellow soldiers; and


WHEREAS:                   Eight members of the 368th Engineering Battalion jumped into action and with their medical skills, fire fighting skills, traffic and crowd control skills, were able to extricate the woman
                                              from her car, assess her injuries and stabilize her, reroute traffic for the emergency equipment to get through, all before the paramedics arrived on the scene; and


WHEREAS:                        The City of Bristol and the victim of this life threatening accident are greatly indebted to SPC James Dixon, SPC Kurtis Haberman, SPC Christine Bashor, PFC Natasha Cunningham,
                                              SGT James McLaughlin, SPC Christopher Elliott, SPC Brett Haynes, and 1LT Peter Torromeo for their quick action and compassionate character; and


WHEREAS:                       These men and women, who volunteer to defend our country, take their responsibilities very seriously, not only on the battlefield, but in harms way, wherever it may be.


NOW  THEREFORE,    I, Arthur J, Ward, Mayor of the City of Bristol take great pleasure in honoring these members of the 368th Engineering Battalion of the Army Reserve and convey my sincere gratitude
                                             and appreciation for their dedication and bravery.


IN  WITNESS  WHEREOF,      I have hereunto signed my name and caused the Great Seal of the City of Bristol to the affixed this 4th day of November, in the year of Our Lord two thousand nine.
